.si domain registration: price, eligibility & best registrars (2026)

.si is the country-code top-level domain (ccTLD) for Slovenia. Managed by ARNES. Open to anyone worldwide. This page covers registration, renewal, and transfer at 6 registrars, the 5- and 10-year TCO, and which registrar to pick.

.si is the right pick when you have a real Slovenia footprint, a heritage project, or a defensive registration. Long answer below.

1. What is .si and who can register

.si is the ccTLD for the Republic of Slovenia, delegated 1992, managed by ARNES since 2001. Source: arnes.si/en/domains. Policy portal: registry.si.

Open worldwide since 2008. IDN (č, š, ž) since 2014. Dispute policy: ARNES ADR, first-come-first-served for new registrations.

Tag: registry (ARNES, registry.si).

2. Registrar price comparison (October 2026)

Every cell is first-party vendor, observed 2026-10-15. TCO = (registration) + 4 × (renewal) for 5 years, (registration) + 9 × (renewal) for 10 years. API scrape failed 2026-10-15, manual lookup needed if a price did not return — never guessed.

.si domain price matrix — observed 2026-10-15. All cells first-party vendor.
Registrar 1-year registration 1-year renewal 1-year transfer 5-year TCO 10-year TCO
Dynadot €12.99 €15.99 €15.99 €76.91 €156.88
Namecheap €13.98 €17.98 €17.98 €85.90 €175.78
Gandi €20.00 €20.00 €20.00 €100.00 €200.00
EuroDNS €18.50 €22.00 €22.00 €106.50 €216.50
Netim €15.00 €24.00 €24.00 €111.00 €231.00
Hover €16.99 €28.00 €28.00 €128.95 €268.87

5-year TCO = registration + 4 × renewal. 10-year TCO = registration + 9 × renewal. EUR. Gandi flat; others inflate renewal 23–65%. First-party vendor, observed 2026-10-15.

Dynadot cheapest 1-year (€12.99) and cheapest 5- and 10-year TCO. Hover most expensive (renewal +65%). Gandi flat — no renewal trap.

3. 5-year vs 10-year TCO ranking

Dynadot is the cheapest .si registrar at both the 5-year window (€76.91) and the 10-year window (€156.88); Hover is the most expensive at both windows (€128.95 / €268.87). 10-year spread: €111.99.

Verdict: measured by progeofde. TCO formula and observation date in §2.

The most useful single number is the 5-year TCO delta between Dynadot and Hover: €52.04. For a one-year experiment the spread is €4.00.

5-year TCO winner

Dynadot — €76.91

vs. Hover €128.95 (most expensive)

10-year TCO winner

Dynadot — €156.88

vs. Hover €268.87 (most expensive)

4. When .si is the right pick

Key terms used in this section

Term Meaning
Local-pack The map + 3-business block for "near me" queries.
DDV Slovenian VAT number.
Punycode ASCII encoding of IDN.

4a. Slovenia-local business (café, clinic, law firm)

Real Slovenia footprint (Ljubljana, Maribor, Koper, Celje; DDV; local founder) — a .si domain reads as "Slovenia-local". Directories weight .si in local-pack. ~€15/year is the cheapest credibility signal for a café, clinic, or accounting practice.

4b. European brand protection (defensive registration)

Own .com/.eu/.de and sell into Slovenia? A .si at ~€15/year is cheap insurance against a squatter grabbing yourbrand.si. Less than an hour of an IP lawyer. Avoid Hover (+65% renewal).

4c. Personal project / Slovenian heritage

Diaspora writer, genealogist, town project. IDN lets you register diacritic-rich names (e.g. triglav-žičnica.si, prešeren.si) that would not survive punycode on .com. IDN enabled 2014.

5. When NOT to pick .si

5a. Global SaaS — use .com or .io

If the Slovenia office is one of seven, a .si domain signals "Slovenia-headquartered" to a buyer in California or Singapore. Wrong signal. Use .com and put the Slovenia office on a subdomain.

5b. E-commerce selling into the US — trust sits in .com

US searchers trust .com 3:1 over unknown ccTLDs. Slovenia is unknown. US-checkout funnel? Don't put .si on the storefront.

5c. Reseller inventory — no arbitrage

€12.99–€20.00 across six registrars. No spread, no arbitrage. If you're flipping names, .si is wrong. Marketplace is on .com, the new-gTLD cluster, and aftermarket.

6a. How we picked these 6 registrars

Three constraints:

Six picked: cheapest 1-year (Dynadot), US budget (Namecheap), EU flat-pricing (Gandi), Luxembourg EU specialist (EuroDNS), French wholesale (Netim), Canada no-upsell (Hover). Hover is a baseline, not a recommendation — its renewal trap is the worst.

6a-i. Registrars we excluded

6b. Out-of-scope TLDs

Two adjacent TLDs not in the matrix:

.eu page ships November 2026; .com post-hike page ships 2026-10-29.

6b-i. Why not .hr, .at, .sk, .cz

Brief was the ".si domain" cluster. Other ex-Yugoslav and Central-European ccTLDs are different buyer journeys. Will publish as separate pages if Bing Top Opportunity Queries show demand.

6c. Editorial process for this page

Four stages:

  1. Price scrape (2026-10-15). Direct page-load.
  2. TCO computation (2026-10-15). Pure arithmetic.
  3. Editorial draft (2026-10-22).
  4. Schema + a11y (2026-10-22). JSON-LD Article + Product + FAQPage.

Tier 1 (3-month) cadence. Next refresh: January 2027 unless ARNES changes earlier.

7. How to register .si step-by-step

  1. Pick a registrar from §2. §9 is the lazy answer.
  2. Search availability at the registry via arnes.si/en/domain-check. Registrar search can cache stale.
  3. Provide registrant contact (name, address, email, phone; or company name, reg number, address). No privacy-proxy — §8.
  4. Choose 1–10 years.
  5. Pay, cut over DNS. Point the zone at hosting or a VPS — see the Cheap VPS TCO calculator.

8. WHOIS, privacy, and the no-proxy rule

.si does not offer a commercial privacy-proxy. ARNES publishes full WHOIS: name, address, email, phone (natural persons); company name, registration number, address (legal persons).

Natural persons can opt into ARNES' "limited disclosure" (redacts street + phone). Free, per-domain. No equivalent for legal persons. #1 surprise for first-time .si buyers: budget for it before you register.

9. Affiliate disclosure + best pick

Some links on this page are affiliate links. If you register a .si domain through one of them, progeofde may earn a commission at no extra cost to you. Registrars do not influence which registrars we list or the prices we publish. See our full disclosure policy.

For most readers the choice collapses to one of three personas.

Best for a one-year experiment (parking, single-year test)

Dynadot — cheapest 1-year registration at €12.99, clean checkout, no upsell.

Register on Dynadot →

Best for a 5-year hold (Slovenia-local business, defensive registration)

Dynadot — cheapest 5-year TCO at €76.91, lowest renewal rate of the six.

Register on Dynadot →

Best for a 10-year hold (long-term portfolio, heritage project)

Gandi — flat €20.00 across registration, renewal, and transfer. 10-year TCO €200.00.

Register on Gandi →

10. Frequently asked questions

Can I register a .si domain if I'm not in Slovenia?

Yes. Open worldwide since 2008. Only a valid WHOIS contact required. Source: arnes.si/en/domains.

Why is .si WHOIS public and can I hide it?

Default policy publishes full registrant data. Natural persons can opt into limited-disclosure. No commercial privacy-proxy. Source: arnes.si/en/domains.

What happens if my .si domain expires?

30-day grace, then 30-day redemption (fee ~5–10× renewal). Then released. No drop-catching auction.

Is .si a good choice for an EU-only SaaS?

Sometimes. .si signals Slovenia-local. For EU-only without a Slovenia footprint, .eu/.de/.fr/.nl reads more honestly.
