Update: For the central verification table, see Confirmed Black Friday VPS Deals 2026. It only marks a VPS deal as confirmed when an official provider source has been checked.
Short answer: the cheapest VPS is not necessarily the plan with the lowest advertised monthly number. Before buying, calculate the recurring bill, the one-time setup cost and the cost of the resources your workload actually needs.
The budget VPS cost checklist
- Compute: record the vCPU type, RAM and whether the plan is shared or dedicated. “1 vCPU” is not a universal performance measure.
- Storage: include the boot disk, extra volumes, snapshots and any backup storage. Check whether the storage is local or network attached.
- Transfer: note the included outbound allowance and the overage price. Inbound traffic may be treated differently.
- IPv4: check whether a public IPv4 address is included, optional or billed separately. Do not assume that powering off a server stops all charges.
- Billing model: monthly cap, hourly usage, per-second billing and annual prepayment produce different totals for short tests and always-on services.
- Renewal and tax: record the renewal price, currency, VAT or sales tax treatment, minimum term and cancellation window.
- Operational cost: budget for backups, monitoring, managed support, email delivery, domain names and your own time to administer the server.
Use official calculators instead of a ranking
Use the provider’s current calculator or pricing page for the final number. DigitalOcean’s Droplet pricing distinguishes bundled plans from resource-based v5 Droplets and documents transfer and billing details. Akamai Cloud’s pricing lists Linode configurations, while its billing documentation explains how hourly services are charged. For Vultr, start with the Cloud Compute documentation and verify the live configuration in the control panel.
Match the plan to the workload
- Learning or a disposable test: prioritise hourly billing, easy deletion and a clear spending limit.
- Small production website: prioritise enough RAM, backups, IPv4 clarity and a support path over the lowest headline price.
- API or database: check storage performance, backup recovery, transfer needs and whether the CPU allocation is appropriate.
- Long-running service: compare the 12-month total and renewal terms, not only the first invoice.
A simple worksheet
| Cost item | Question to answer |
|---|---|
| Compute | What CPU, RAM and billing unit are included? |
| Storage and backup | What is included, and what is billed separately? |
| Network | How much outbound transfer and what IPv4 charges apply? |
| Commitment | What are the minimum term, renewal and cancellation rules? |
| Total | What will the first month and the next 12 months cost? |
